Good writing haunts us. The best stories resonate and are spun of layers that linger in our imagination, memory and emotions the way the final notes of a symphony linger in the air like a whisper or a dream. When a story slips within a reader, it does so because a variety of techniques are employed such as vivid character development, events that create worry and involvement, and the then that more ephemeris layer, the connections that lie beneath the track of words.

Between the Lines is an accumulation of the many suggestions I've been making to students and clients over the years. It teaches writers that a compelling narrative often lies between the lines, in the quiet moments and the subtlest techniques where fiction lifts off the page and settles into the veins of the reader. This soaring isn't mere rhetoric; it is part of the "fictional dream" that John Gardner so aptly described in The Art of Fiction, and it also implies a level of technique that separates polished writers from hacks.
